KUST Faculty Play Key Role in National Seismic and Building Code Initiatives
Komar University of Science and Technology is proud to announce that faculty from the Civil Engineering Department have been appointed to critical national roles shaping Iraq’s future in seismic safety and construction standards.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ako Rashed Hama, Chairperson of Civil Engineering, has been nominated by the Iraqi Federal Government’s Advisory Commission as one of only 15 consultants nationwide to develop a comprehensive national rescue and emergency plan for seismic activities. He will also contribute to updating Iraqi building codes for residential structures, reflecting his expertise and commitment to community safety.
In addition, Dr. Ako Rashed and Dr. Sardasht S. Weli have been appointed as members of the official committee for the Iraqi Building Code Update Project, launched at the Prime Minister’s Office on December 12, 2024. The committee is tasked with reviewing and modernizing national building codes, with new proposals expected in May 2025. Its next meeting will be hosted at Komar University in February 2025, underscoring KUST’s role as a center for innovation and academic excellence.
