A joint workshop with the University of Garmian
On Monday February 20th, 2023, Civil Engineering department in collaboration with the department of civil engineering of the University of Garmian held a workshop about the the seismic assessment and design recommendation: Turkey case study. The workshop was held in the University of Garmian. During the workshop three lectures were given, namely Turkey-Syria Earthquake: Case description and seismic assessments of typical buildings by Sardasht S. Weli from KUST, Lessons learned from past earthquakes in Turkey: Structures damage and performance by Firat L. Hameed from the University of Garmian, and Recommendations to earthquake Resistance of Masonry Building by Dr. Ghazi Juma Bahroz from the University of Garmian.
A group of students from the Department of Civil Engineering from KUST joined the workshop. The workshop explained the history of the building collapses in Turkey. Many collapse case studies has been shown, the possible lessons were discussed. Later, the current structural performance of the collapsed building were discussed. It has been stated that many of the past failure mechanism has been seen during the recent earthquake. Finally, proper design recommendations were proposed for the masonry structures.
